Ties reflect mutual affinity for past, future.

Our country has been loved by the Japanese people for years and recently
has enjoyed their favor and a more evident popularity during the "Year
of Italy in Japan 2001-2002."
I am deeply convinced that Japan and Italy have many similarities,
including a love of traditional culture and art, and at the
same time they share a parallel interest in the development
of a new society, beyond the postmodern era, where the commitment
to scientific research and new technologies can be interwoven
with the needs of a society sensitive to interpersonal relations
and social solidarity. I think this simple fact is one of
the causes of the outstanding growth in the number of Japanese
students of the Italian language and, on the other side, of
Italian students of the Japanese language and culture. They
have understood that a mutual understanding of cultural heritage
is a "conditio sine qua non", or prerequisite, to
approach the partner country. This approach cannot be bypassed
by use of a "lingua franca" without understanding
the rich and millenary cultural backgrounds of both our countries.

我々の国は何年もの間、日本の人々によって愛され、そして最近「2001-2002、日本におけるイタリア年」の間に日本人の親切さといっそう明白になった人気を楽しみました。私は日本とイタリアが伝統的な文化と芸術とそれらを愛する人を含め多くの類似性を持っていることを確信しております。同時に対人関係と社会の団結に敏感な社会の必要性と科学的研究への約束と新しい技術が織り交ぜ、
"postmodern" 時代を越える新しい社会の創造することの利益を共有しております。
私はこの単純な事実がイタリア語を学ぶ日本人の増加、一方での日本語と日本文化を学ぶイタリア人の増加の理由の１つであると考えております。日本人とイタリア人が相互に文化的な遺産の理解することが
"conditio sine qua non"、あるいは、相手国にアプローチするためには不可欠であることを理解しました。
このアプローチは我々の国の双方の豊かで何千年もの文化遺産を理解しない「共通語」によっては回避されることができません。

Il nostro paese e` amato dai giapponesi da anni e recentemente ha goduto
del loro favore e popolarita` durante l'"Anno Italiano in Giappone
2001-2002." Sono profondamente convinto che il Giappone e l'Italia
hanno molte somiglianze, incluso un amore per la cultura tradizionale e
l'arte, ed allo stesso tempo condividono un interesse parallelo nello sviluppo
di una societa` nuova, oltre l'era postmoderna, dove l'impegno nella ricerca
scientifica e tecnologica puo` essere intessuto con le necessita`di una
societa`sensibile, a relazioni interpersonali e solidarieta` sociale. Io
penso che questo semplice fatto e` una delle cause della notevole crescita
del numero di studenti giapponesi della lingua italiana e, da un altro
lato, di studenti italiani della lingua e cultura giapponesi. Loro hanno
capito che una comprensione reciproca di queste eredita` culturali e` una
"conditio sine qua non.", o prerequisito, per avvicinarsi reciprocamente.
Questo approccio non puo` essere superato dall'uso di una "lingua
franca", senza capire il ricco e millenario passato culturale di entrambi
i nostri paesi.
